What is DLT and why is it mandatory for SMS in India? +
DLT (Distributed Ledger Technology) is TRAI's framework to control commercial SMS in India, mandatory since March 2021. Every business that sends commercial SMS must register on a telecom operator's DLT portal with their Entity ID, Sender ID (Header), and pre-approved message templates. Messages without valid DLT registration are blocked by all operators — Jio, Airtel, Vodafone-Idea, BSNL — before they reach your customers. ReachPilot handles this compliance for you.
How long does DLT registration take? +
Entity registration typically takes 2–4 business days once you submit documents (GST certificate, company PAN, address proof). Header/Sender ID registration takes 1–2 business days. Template approval can be instant to 24 hours depending on the template category. Our team guides you through every step and tracks status for you, so the whole process typically completes in under 5 working days.
What is the delivery rate for SMS compared to WhatsApp? +
Transactional SMS via our premium routes achieves 96–98% delivery rates with the remainder typically failing due to switched-off phones or invalid numbers. For OTP routes, we maintain <3 second delivery times with 99%+ delivery. Promotional SMS delivery depends on DND filtering — typically 60–70% of your list is eligible (non-DND). WhatsApp generally has higher engagement but requires your contacts to be on WhatsApp — SMS has near-universal reach across all mobile subscribers in India.
Can I send SMS in Hindi or regional Indian languages? +
Yes! We support Unicode SMS in Hindi (Devanagari), Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, Punjabi, and Odia. Note that Unicode messages use double the characters (70 chars per segment vs 160 for English ASCII), so a 140-character Hindi message counts as 2 SMS segments for billing. Our platform shows you the exact segment count before you send. Unicode templates also need separate DLT registration — we handle that too.
